crushed in velvet

2025. Earthenware, slip, glaze, underglaze, luster, gold leaf, flocking.

Velvet paintings have been linked to royalty since the 14th century. These paintings originally depicted Hindu deities, which Marco Polo then brought to utilization in European churches. During WWII, velvet paintings depicting Polynesian culture and beautiful women were imported by American soldiers. At the height of velvet paintings’ popularity, subjects of these Americana portraits included Jesus, Elvis, John Wayne, Indigenous peoples, and cowboys. They became objects of tacky indulgence and cultural appropriation. This adorned portrait of my wife contests the stereotypes imposed on velvet portraiture and Latinx identities in American visual culture.
